Best Family Stays
The most successful of our family holidays are those where our children are engaged. Some places are better set up for this than others, and if your children are anything like ours, the more on offer the better. This is not an extensive list by any means – the coast, of course, is the ultimate family destination but coastal properties don’t feature here for fear they would overwhelm it. Moreover, we only write about the places we have visited ourselves, but it’s a list that is always expanding.
El Karama– Eco-friendly lodge on the edge of Laikipa that offers a wealth of activities for children. These include a bush school for kids, cookery classes, tracking footprints (and making clay imprints of them), and a swimming pool. The lodge offers enough for adults to do, too, from bush camping to game drives and horse-riding. A long-time favourite among expats. reservations@elkaramalodge.com Tel: 0702 996 902
Laikipia Wilderness– Low-impact camp in northern Laikipia with six tents, contributing to the "out in the bush" feel. There’s lots for children to do, particularly if they’re old enough to take part in more adventurous activities, such as rock climbing, rafting and bushcraft. Not far from the camp is a beautiful river setting where the adults can enjoy their sundowners while the kids can play in and around the water. annabelle@laikipia-wilderness.com Tel: 0727 804 926
House in the Wild– Lovely setting overlooking the Mara river in the Enonkishu Conservancy. Frankly, anywhere that has a swimming pool climbs up a few notches on my family go-to list. But this is a lovely setting in other respects too, with thatched cottages dotted around the property, and a welcoming communal dining area. It’s well set up to cater for several families – so why not go with friends. When my children have other kids to play with, who needs entertainment? bookings@bush-and-beyond.com Tel: 020 600 0457
Kembu Cottages & Campsite – The rustic cottages on this property are surrounded by rolling farmland and horses, although only to look at, not to ride. It is an affordable getaway with enough to keep kids happy for a few days from archery, an obstacle course, a visit to Kenana knitters, and walks around the farm. bookings@kembucottages.comTel 0722 355 705
