Northern Kenya is probably the least visited part of the country, but it is without question one of the most stunning. It is a magical destination for road trippers - particularly if travelling in convoy - with graded, dirt roads through gorgeous mountain scenery, off-road driving across the Chalbi desert, not to mention the tricky, stony roads that take one up the eastern shore of Lake Turkana - as far as the archaeological digs of Sibiloi if you are adventurous enough. Camping is still de rigueur here, but for those looking for comfort, some upmarket lodges are dotted around. The Northern Rangelands Trust has added some exciting budget properties to the mix, and there are decent accommodations to be found in towns.
