Satoa Elerai, Amboseli & Environs
Attractive mid-range camp situated in its own 5,000-acre conservancy a 30-minute drive from Amboseli national park
Layout
Elerai is a low-slung camp situated atop a small hill, giving it commanding views towards Mt Kilimanjaro and Amboseli. Game congregates around the small watering hole within view of the dining area, and the accommodation is spread out to the sides of the camp, with tents looking out onto the mountain, and the cottages towards the conservancy.
Rooms
The lodge has five stone and acacia cottages with spacious bedrooms, a bathroom with a view, and a small alcove with a desk. All look out to the west of the camp towards the conservancy area. There are a further 12 en suite tents with private verandahs facing out towards the mountain.
Food
Accommodation is provided on a full-board basis, and guests can choose from a limited menu. Food is generally quite good, although there’s a shortage of child-friendly options. Nevertheless, certain items can be made or adjusted on request. The al fresco dining area looks out onto a watering hole for game viewing, and Mt Kilimanjaro to the south. When it comes to cuisine, this is largely a no-frills lodge – so do not expect the little luxuries such as sundowner bitings.
Activities
The camp has a small, but beautifully sited, swimming pool with tremendous views. Guests can explore the private conservancy around the lodge, either on foot with a ranger or in a vehicle, and can expect to see game such as elephant and giraffe. Big cats are more elusive here, but Amboseli national park is just a 30-minute drive away and for most guests is a central part of a visit to Elerai. Hiring of the camp’s game vehicle is done at an additional cost, and availability is limited.
Upsides
The location and feel is far lovelier than many places in this area, and there is plentiful game around the camp. The rooms are thoughtfully designed, blending in with their natural surroundings, and there is a cosy bar area around the fire for down time.
Downsides
The lack of game vehicles available to guests is a minor irritation. The camp is unfenced, and the wildlife can pass through – guests should be escorted at all times in the hours of darkness, but it can be tricky to call up an askari from your cottage or tent.
Location
The lodge is located about a 30-minute drive from Amboseli’s Kimani gate, and roughly four hours from Nairobi via the main highway. There’s a much quieter road that runs parallel to the Mombasa Rd (turn off at Athi River, and take a left turn shortly before Kajiado) before joining the C102 but it will add 40 minutes to an hour of extra journey time.
Price
The rate per person sharing starts from Ksh 11,500, or Ksh 8,625 per child sharing (with another child). Conservancy fees are Ksh 2,650 per person.
