Kamboyo Guest House, Tsavo West
A gem of a KWS guest house with its own watering hole – just a short drive from the main gate at Mtito Andei
Layout
This former warden’s house is just a 10-minute drive from the main gate, and lies at the top of an outcrop with splendid views over Tsavo West. The house has four bedrooms (two with a double and single; a twin; and a single), sleeping up to nine. A spacious living and dining area and outdoors viewing deck make it a convivial spot for families and friends.
Kitchen facilities
The house is offered on a self-catering basis, with two members of staff deployed to clean, put down nets, and wash up. The kitchen is relatively spacious with a cooker / oven and microwave, and a fridge that didn’t close properly at the time of our last visit. It is fairly well equipped although saucepans are on the larger side. They might be missing items such as tin openers and corkscrews.
Activities
The house offers a lovely spot for viewing game from the comfort of the sofas on the deck, but most guests will spend a chunk of the day out on game drives. Head to Mzima Springs on the river for a nature trail and the underwater viewing area for hippos (dependent on water levels, though), or drive through the Sheitani lava flow, a plain of black rock. There are various conservation projects in the area, including the Ngulia rhino sanctuary.
Upsides
For those familiar with KWS accommodation, Kamboyo is one of the KWS jewels. At some point, a lot of care and thought has been lavished on this cottage, even if it isn’t always kept up. Its location is excellent, with beautiful views, making it a thoroughly peaceful spot. It is a good halfway point to and from the coast.
Downsides
As mentioned above, it suffers from a lack of maintenance. The mosquito nets are not in the best condition, and the kitchen is on the simpler side. A fridge which doesn’t close needs to be rectified. At certain times of year, the insects can be a nuisance, but as long as doors and windows are closed, they aren’t any more bothersome than many other places.
Location
The guest house is located within Tsavo West about 10 minutes from the Mtito Andei. It’s a roughly four to five-hour drive from Nairobi, and another hour and a half to Voi. You can also choose to drive down through Tsavo West, exiting on the Taita Taveta road.
Price
The house costs Ksh 15,000 per night.
