Ngutuni Lodge, Voi
Ngutuni, located in its own 10,000-acre conservancy next to Tsavo East, is a useful place to break a long journey, or as a base for game viewing
Configuration
Large safari lodge, popular with tour groups, is built with two double-storey wings positioned to overlook a watering hole, to which all kinds of game flock, more so in the dry season. The 48 rooms, usually with a double and single, are simple and comfortable in design, and family rooms interconnect. Each room has its a private verandah facing out into the conservancy and the watering hole. The open-air main dining area doubles up as the place for relaxation, with guests encouraged to take sundowners on the viewing deck, a continuation of the main hall. A swimming pool has been built on the property in the last year, and is a very welcome addition to the property.
Food
When guest numbers are not high, food is based on a set menu, and is reasonably good. There's a buffet in high season when the number of guests merit it.
Activities
The lodge offers game drives, including night viewing, and walking safaris. There's a decent-sized swimming pool.
Upsides
The watering hole is one of this lodge's most appealing features. When rains are scarce, you may well see herd of elephant passing through, not to mention giraffe, jackals, hyenas and other interesting game. It's decent accommodation at a price that won't break the bank.
Downsides
For those looking for something more intimate, then Ngutuni doesn't offer that. It's large, but not too large. It would be nice to have a communal living room / lounge area besides the dining room / viewing platform.
Points of Interest
It's a good half-way point to and from the coast, whether coming along the Mombasa Rd or via Tsavo East park (from the direction of Malindi, Watamu etc).
Pricing
Singles start from around Ksh 7,500 per night on HB (residents).
